2006 Preakness Stakes Result

2006 Kentucky Derby winner, Barbaro, ridden by Edgar Prado, was sent off as a huge favourite to secure this second leg of the coveted Triple Crown. However disaster struck after just a furlong when Prado pulled the colt up with a serious leg injury.

Barbaro’s departure was a huge shock to the 118,000 plus spectators at Pimlico racecourse who had to watch 13-1 shot Benardini take up the running on the final bend and move away from the field in the final stretch. He won by over five lengths from Sweetnorthernsaint with Hemingway's Key back in third.
